Small $10.001 Serve
My desert island pick—no question. Creamy potato, slow-cooked leek, and smoky bacon come together in this rich, comforting bowl of brilliance. It’s hearty, humble, and yes... I’d gladly eat it on a 45°C day while stuck on a tropical beach, chatting strategy with a volleyball named Wilson. Made with real ingredients and zero shortcuts.

Grown-up comfort with a cheeky wink. This soup doesn’t shout—it smoulders. We take roasted pumpkin (golden, obviously) and fold it through a base kissed with brown butter. Not your average knob-of-dairy; this is rich, nutty, and borderline flirtatious. Fresh sage leaves melt right in—no crispy drama—giving each spoonful a warm, earthy hum like a good winter jumper and a bad rom-com. The result? Velvety, golden goodness that tastes like you definitely know what you’re doing in the kitchen (even if you reheated it in socks). Serve it solo, swirl it with cream, dunk a crusty soldier—whatever makes you feel like the main character.

Despite being in the top 2 most popular flavours of Sophies Macarons, they are notoriously hard to get a good photo of. THESE BABIES CONTAIN NO ARTIFICIAL COLOURS OR FLAVOURS unlike your "traditional" macarons. These beauties are coloured with a little cocoa - which adds a deliciously gentle touch of chocolate to the salted caramel of the filling. Best enjoyed when no-one else is home.

Anyone who thinks chickens don't have fingers hasn't cut one off at the Belgrave roundabout. Light and tasty crumbed chicken "nuggets" are great as a snack or served with potato and gravy.

Chicken thighs marinated in satay spices (not spicy ones), grilled, and sensually slathered and simmered in rich peanut and coconut gravy. It's a sexy, nutty, rich and dreamy dish - if it helps you can imagine Nigella cooking it. This could be served with flatbreads, or one could go loopy like that one restaurant I went to one time and serve it with fettuccine (just don't tell the Italians!). It is, however, served appropriately with perfectly cooked rice.

This dish is best described by Julia Childs: "Oh, what a marvelous dish this is! Tender beef—and I mean really tender—sautéed with those lovely earthy mushrooms and bits of smoky ham, all swimming together in the most wonderful, creamy gravy. You see, the secret is in the slow simmering. Don't rush it! Let that sauce develop its character, let it thicken naturally and become absolutely silky. This is the sort of hearty, honest cooking that makes everyone happy. Nothing fussy, nothing complicated—just good beef, good mushrooms, and a sauce that knows exactly what it's doing. The kind of dish that fills the kitchen with the most divine aromas and makes you feel terribly pleased with yourself. Bon appétit!" Its a classic tale of humble mash meets butter but.... plot twist!! This butter has lead a life of fear and resentment burnt by past lovers and friends.

There is a moment in every cook's life when they realise that Germany — a country more associated with engineering precision and extremely serious facial expressions — has quietly, without any fanfare whatsoever, been producing some of the most unapologetically satisfying food on earth. This is that moment. Pork shoulder, slow-cooked until it has completely given up any structural ambitions and surrendered itself entirely to smoke, spice and its own rendered glory. Served alongside buttered baby potatoes that are small, round, and absolutely thrilled to be there. It's the kind of meal that makes you sit down heavily in a chair and go quiet in a way your family initially mistakes for distress but eventually recognises as deep, uncomplicated contentment. The dog will sit near you. The children will want some. Do not share the potatoes. Aggressively German in the best possible way. Pair with a cold beer, a strong opinion about efficiency, and absolutely nothing else. 🐷

Anyone who thinks chickens don't have fingers hasn't cut one off at the Belgrave roundabout. Light and tasty crumbed chicken "nuggets" are a great alternative to the shame of ordering food from KFC. They don't photograph well.... but they do taste great.

Sophie's review: "OMG Babe, how do you make healthy things taste so good? I don't get it." This "salad" features all my favourite things (wife and kids excluded), fresh herbs, seeds and nuts, dried fruit, and ricotta. The pumpkin is slowly roasted to perfection and the salad strewn casually across for that "just stepped out of the cafe" look.

Served as a pack for one ready to heat and eat, or just as yummo without the heating part!! Another Ottolenghi-inspired meal, mushrooms cooked out in aromatic oil full of flavour and then served with a light salad of butter beans with lemon, roasted red onion, and zucchini.

This RAW dish has it's roots in Sudan (says Wikipedia) but is most common in Indonesia and I learned how to make it in Hamilton NZ, and will cook it in Monbulk with Thai inspired Son in Law Eggs that I leaned from an Aussie Chef from Queensland whilst working in a Restaurant in Falls Creek. Much like it's heritage its a jumble of delicious things all bound with one nutty idea. Zingy, fresh and dare I say healthy?

Silky smooth pumpkin sauce meets perfectly cooked pasta in a comforting embrace, with fresh spinach adding a pop of color and goodness. A hint of nutmeg and garlic rounds out the richness, while toasted walnuts bring a satisfying crunch. It’s cozy, nourishing, and just the right amount of indulgent—like a warm hug in a bowl.
